MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The IUP women's lacrosse team dropped their season opener to ranked Grand Valley State, 13-9, despite staying even up until the fourth quarter.
Kathryn Burke scored six of IUP's nine goals today, she first hit the stride just a minute into the game to put the Hawks on the board first.
Grand Valley State added two goals just two minutes after Burke's.
Burke struck again around the 6:30 mark in the first quarter to tie up the game at two each. The Lakers added another goal to round out the first quarter in the lead, 3-2.
In the second quarter, Burke began the scoring around the 12-minute mark that tied the score once again. In the remainder of the second, the Lakers added a total of three goals. Leah Moyer added one around the two-minute mark and was assisted by Maggie Kilgallon.
The first half ended with IUP trailing by two, 6-4.
IUP opened the third quarter with three consecutive goals to retake to lead 7-6. Scorers included Burke, Emme Mass, and Brenna Whiteside. IUP's final goal in the third came with one minute on the clock by Burke to tie up the score for the final time this afternoon.
In the fourth quarter, Grand Valley State jumped ahead with five goals, which included four consecutive goals that was broken up by Burke with her sixth and final goal of the afternoon at the eight-minute mark.

IUP will open action at home on Saturday, March 1, against Millersville. The start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
