ELKINS, W.Va. -- The IUP baseball team overpowered Davis & Elkins 20-2 on Wednesday afternoon, with 12 players scoring runs. The Hawks combined for 24 hits, including eight doubles and two home runs.
IUP extended their win streak to five games and are now 12-19 on the season.
In the second inning, Cayden Bender drew a walk and Teague Hoover doubled to left field with one out on the board. Ricardo Aponte doubled to left field for two RBI, sending Bender and Hoover across the plate, IUP 2-0.
Davis & Elkin's two runs were scored in the bottom of the third, just before IUP went on an 18-run streak.
IUP added five runs in the fourth on four hits. Hoover was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Au'sean Owens's single to third base. He then stole second and Hoover scored on Aponte's sacrifice fly to center field. Hits from Mitchell Grosch and Mike Huber drove in two runs and an Elijah Dunn homer brought in Huber which put the Hawks ahead by five.
In the fifth, Owens scored from Aponte's single to right field after he got on base from a double to right field.
In the sixth, Huber singled to center field, stole two bases, and scored on an error by the catcher. Peyton Johnson drew a walk, advanced on a passed ball, and to third from a single from Camden Rhude. Johnson scored on an RBI from Bender.
IUP scored four runs in the seventh on four hits. The scorers were Owens, Mateo Cepullio, Branden Kanick, and Gardner Fravel.
In the eighth, both Cepullio and Fravel singled to center field. A groundout from Nizeah Mummert drove in Cepullio. Davin Landers homered to left field for two RBI, bringing in Fravel.
In the final inning, Robert Carfagno and Cepullio both drew walks and advanced from Fravel's single to center field. Hits from Mummert and Landers drove in the final two runs.
