INDIANA, Pa. -- The IUP baseball team won both games this afternoon against Clarion to extend their win streak to seven games.
With today's results, IUP is now 14-19 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
Game one
Going 3-for-3 at the plate was Mitchell Grosch and Davin Landers who also each scored three runs. Teague Hoover had two hits and three RBI while four other players recorded hits. On the mound was Derrick Shields who pitched 6.0 innings, gave up two hits and one run, and posted eight strikeouts.
IUP scored 10 runs before Clarion scored their first in the top of the fifth.
IUP scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning on four hits. Camden Rhude singled, advanced to third on Landers' double to right, and came home on Hoover's sacrifice fly to center. Ricardo Aponte followed with a double to right-center, driving in Landers. After stealing third, Aponte scored as the next three batters drew consecutive walks. Peyton Johnson singled and advanced to second on an error with all three runners scoring. A swinging strikeout ended the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Hawks tacked on three more runs with just one hit. Landers walked, Owens was hit by a pitch, and both advanced on a groundout. Grosch hit a three-run homer to put the Hawks ahead 9-0.
Elijah Dunn scored in the bottom of the fourth inning from Hoover's infield single. Clarion added their lone run in the top of the fifth, but IUP answered when Grosch scored in the bottom from a wild pitch.
In the sixth, Landers doubled to right field and came around to score on Hoover's double down the left field line.
Game two
IUP got on the board in the second inning with three consecutive hits. Johnson singled to center field, Robert Carfagno doubled to right field, and Landers double sent both runners home. A sac fly from Owens drove in Landers which put IUP ahead, 3-0.
The Golden Eagles scored two runs during the third and fourth innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, Landers singled to center field and Hoover reached on an error by the left fielder. Owens drew a walk to load the bases. Ricardo Aponte's single to left field drove in Landers to put ahead 4-2. Despite two stolen bases, a swinging strikeout left them stranded.
Dunn drew a walk and stole both second and third but was left on base after two strikeouts in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Landers singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw. Hoover doubled to left field, bringing in Landers. Owens followed with a singled and then stole second. Grosch drew a walk to load the bases. Huber also drew a walk, forcing in Hoover, and Dunn's sac fly to center field allowed Owens to score.
