Seventh inning comebacks secure series sweep over Clarion

CLARION, Pa. -- The IUP baseball team used two seventh-inning comebacks to secure the series sweep over Clarion Sunday afternoon. 

With today's results, IUP has won nine straight games and improved to 11-5 in conference play.

Game one
Davin Landers went 4-for-4 at the plate, had one home run, and two RBI.

Both teams remained scoreless until Landers homered in the top of the fourth. Clarion jumped to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth from four consecutive hits.

In the sixth, Cayden Bender doubled to right field and scored on a Landers single through the right side.

IUP completed the comeback in the seventh. Mike Huber singled to left field and advanced to second on a groundout. Peyton Johnson's RBI single drove in Huber which tied the game at three each. Bender and Landers added singles, with Bender advancing to third. An infield error allowed Hoover to reach base and brought Bender home for the go-ahead run, securing a 4-3 win for the Crimson Hawks.

Game two
IUP was first to get on the board with Mitchell Grosch's single driving in Au'sean Owens. Clarion took the lead in the bottom of the third. With bases loaded, a single to left field drove in two runs. 

In the top of the sixth IUP tied the game at two each. Johnson drew a walk and scored on an error from Robert Carfagno's single to right field. 

The Golden Eagles scored another two runs in the bottom of the inning to get ahead, 4-2. Two batters drew walks and then both scored from a single up in the middle. 

IUP rallied in the top of the seventh with four runs on two hits. Hoover and Owens both drew walks and a Ricardo Aponte single sent Hoover across the plate. Grosch drew a walk which loaded the bases with no outs. After two changes on the mound, a fly out to left field drove in Owens to tie the score at four apiece. With two outs, Carfagno delivered a clutch double to left field, bringing in Grosch and Aponte to put the Hawks ahead, 6-4.
