INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP softball won game one of the doubleheader, enforcing the run rule with a comfortable victory. In the second game however, IUP found themselves in a deficit quickly and could not get back on top.
With the results of the doubleheader against Gannon, IUP is 22-10 overall and 13-5 in conference play.
Game One
Kendall Young was on the mound and pitched a complete game. She faced 20 batters and only allowed two hits, three runs and logged three strikeouts. As a team, the Crimson Hawks totaled three stolen bases and 12 RBIs. Delaney Patella had herself a day with seven RBIs, going 3-for-4 at the plate with one three-run home run and a double.
IUP came out hot as soon as the game began. Patella doubled down the right field line and was able to advance to third on a fielding error. This hit brought Jordan Sylivia, Maddie Griffin, and Madison Pikula all home to give IUP three runs. Reagan Rand singled to the pitcher and brought home Patella. Jess Cekada grounded out to second base and brought home Paige Truax who originally got on base from a fielding error. The explosive first inning ended with Tess Smiley who singled to the pitcher, and brought home Rand in the process. IUP ended the first inning with a 6-0 lead.
The scoring did not stop in the second inning either. Griffin reached on a throwing error and Sylvia singled to right center. These two hits set up Patella with a three run home run that went to right center. Truax drew a walk right after and Rand brought Truax home on a double that went into left field, increasing IUP's lead to 10-0.
Gannon scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning with a three-run home run that went to center field.
Truax singled to center field at the top of the fourth. Rand doubled down the left field line that drove in Truax.
After Griffin singled to shortstop and Sylvia was walked, Pate singled up the middle, this hit advanced Sylvia to second and brought Griffin home. Pate's hit gave the Crimson Hawks a 12-3 lead and after Young shut out Gannon in the bottom of the fifth, the game ended early due to the run rule.
Game Two
The Golden Knights found themselves up three runs in the bottom of the first after two doubles and a single brought three runners home.
