IUP lacrosse uses eight-goal surge to defeat Gannon, 13-7

INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's lacrosse team secured a conference win over the Gannon Golden Knights with consistent scoring including an eight-goal run, 13-7 Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Crimson Hawks improved to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in PSAC play. IUP outshot Gannon 38-16 and doubled their shots on goal. IUP picked up 24 ground balls and totaled 12 caused turnovers. 

Brenna Whiteside led the scoring charge with four goals and an assist, while Kathryn Burke added five points with two goals and three assists. Burke also won three draw controls and caused two turnovers. Emme Mass scored twice and led the team with six draw controls. IUP's remaining five goals came from five different players.

IUP controlled possession of the game early on and scored the first goal at 10:08 by Burke. Gannon answered two minutes later, but the Hawks regained the lead at 7:11 with a goal from Whiteside off a Burke assist. Julia Steere added a third goal at 2:38 before Gannon closed the first quarter with one of their own.

The Golden Knights tied it 3-3 early in the second quarter, but IUP responded with five unanswered goals. Whiteside scored twice more in the period, while Leah Moyer and Mass each added one, giving the Hawks a 7-3 lead at halftime.

Whiteside opened the third with a free-position goal at 13:26, followed by another from Mass off a Burke assist. Burke and Angela Xenakis added to the tally before Gannon ended the Hawks' eight-goal run with a goal at 2:53.

The Golden Knights opened the fourth with two goals within the first five minutes. Maggie Boyle scored at 6:48 and Macenzie Haragos scored at 3:55 to extend IUP's lead to 13-6. Gannon netted one more before the game ended.
