IUP women's lacrosse edged in final road matchup

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The IUP women's lacrosse team came up just short in a pivotal conference road contest on Wednesday afternoon, falling 11-10 to Lock Haven.

Kathryn Burke led IUP with three goals and one assist. Alexi Crosby and Brenna Whiteside each netted two goals, while three other players added one apiece. Mia Martorano picked up five ground balls and led with four caused turnovers.

Burke opened the scoring at the 13:23 mark of the first quarter, but Lock Haven quickly answered less than 30 seconds later. Macenzie Haragos tallied IUP's second goal at 8:56, closing out the scoring for the quarter.

In the second quarter, Lock Haven added three goals within a three minute span to get ahead, 4-2. At 7:02, Burke added her second goal of the day and Maggie Kilgallon scored on a free position attempt to tie the score at four each. Lock Haven capitalized on draw controls and fast ball movement to score three more, but late goals from Whiteside and Crosby cut the deficit to 7-6 at the half.

IUP controlled the third quarter defensively, holding Lock Haven scoreless. Haragos and Whiteside each found the net, giving the Crimson Hawks an 8-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Lock Haven surged ahead with another three-goal run. Burke's final goal came at 6:12 to pull IUP within one, but the Bald Eagles answered with a draw win and quick strike to go up by two. Keira Baskot scored with 1:18 remaining to make it a one-goal game, 11-10. Despite winning the next draw, IUP turned the ball over and was unable to make a final attempt.
