Aponte leads IUP to doubleheader sweep over UPJ on Senior Day

INDIANA, Pa. -- The IUP baseball program secured a doubleheader sweep over Pitt-Johnstown Friday afternoon. Prior to the start of the second game, the IUP baseball program recognized 12 student-athletes a part of the senior class.

Game one

Ricardo Aponte went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scored four runs, hit two home runs, and had five RBI.

The first run of the day came in the bottom of the third when Aponte homered to left field. Mike Huber singled down the left field line and advanced to third on Peyton Johnson's single to right center. Johnson stole second and Huber scored on an error. Johnson followed with another stolen base and scored on Camden Rhude's double down the left field line.

IUP added four runs in the fourth inning. Teague Hoover began with a single to center and advanced to second when Ausean Owens drew a walk. Aponte's RBI single drove in Hoover and the bases became loaded when Mitchell Grosch was hit by a pitch. Owens scored on a groundout and Aponte came around on Elijah Dunn's single to right field. IUP drew three consecutive walks which sent Grosch across the plate to put the Hawks ahead 7-0.

The Mountain Cats got on the board at the top of the fifth with a grand slam.

In the bottom of the fifth, Aponte and Grosch both drew walks. They both advanced on a throwing error, and Aponte scored. With a 1-2 count and two outs, the game was put into a weather delay. A fly out by Huber scored Grosch, with the inning ending with one runner left on base.

Aponte hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth to left field, scoring Hoover and Owens to put the Hawks ahead 12-4.

Game two

In the third inning IUP scored two runs. Hoover drew a walk and advanced to third when Owens doubled to right field. Aponte's sac fly to right field drove in both runners on base.
