IUP softball splits doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown

LORETTO, Pa. -- The IUP softball team split Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mountain Cats at Saint Francis University. IUP won game one 8-5 but dropped the second 8-3.

With today's results, IUP is now 19-9 overall and 10-4 in conference action.

Game 1

The Mountain Cats scored first in the bottom of the first inning from a home run to right field.

In the second, Paige Truax drew a walk, and Reagan Rand reached on an error off a sacrifice bunt. Emily Miller reached on fielder's choice with Rand tagged out at second while Truax advanced to third. Tess Smiley then delivered an RBI single to right center, which tied the game at 1-1 before a groundout ended the inning.

UPJ added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning from a two-run home run to regain the lead.

IUP added four runs in the top of the fifth on two hits and four walks. Smiley led off with a walk and stole second, while Madison Pikula and Maddie Griffin also drew walks to load the bases. Smiley scored on a wild pitch, Griffin stole second, and Truax drew another walk. Rand singled through the left side to drive in both Griffin and Pikula. Brianna Pusateri pinch-hit for Jess Cekada and had a RBI single to center, scoring Truax and giving IUP back a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth, IUP added three more runs on four hits. Smiley singled and scored off of Pikula's double to left center. Griffin followed with a single and stole second before Pikula crossed the plate on a Jordan Sylvia RBI single to center.

UPJ attempted a late comeback with their second two-run homer of the game in the seventh, but IUP held on for the win.

Game 2

With two outs in the third inning, Pikula singled to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball. She came around to score on an error at third base, allowing Griffin to reach second. Sylvia singled but a groundout ended the inning with IUP in the lead 1-0.

In the bottom of the inning, the Mountain Cats added four runs off of five hits and one error. They added another in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth off of eight combined hits.

Jaycee Haidze homered in the top of the sixth and drove in Truax to put IUP within two, 5-3.
