Splash Plays, Stout Defense Lead Football Over Lock Haven

INDIANA, Pa. – What a difference a week can make. After a season-opening loss that left much to be desired by the Crimson Hawks, the team exploded for 42 points, including five touchdown passes, tying a single-game school record by Graduate Student Matthew Rueve, to give the Hawks their first win of the season. Jeremiah Coleman had two touchdown catches, including a 72-yard catch and run. Coleman had a total of 95 yards receiving.

Redshirt sophomore Devin Whitlock also had a huge game, tallying 150 yards receiving on seven receptions. He also had a touchdown. Whitlock averaged over 21 yards per reception from the slot.

IUP had four scoring plays of at least 30 yards, including three Rueve passes and a punt return for a score by Kalen Frazier. The punt return for a touchdown was the first by a Crimson Hawk since 2014. Frazier had four returns for a total of 75 yards.

After recording a negative net rushing game last week, the IUP defense flipped the script and gave Lock Haven a taste of that medicine this week, holding Lock Haven to 115 yards rushing. Overall, IUP recorded 405 total yards of offense, with 370 coming in the passing game. IUP recorded 18 first downs through Rueve's arm.

The Crimson Hawks forced the Bald Eagles into seven punts, while senior punter Aiden Spitler made just two appearances in the special teams game for IUP.

A turning point in the game was the IUP defense holding Lock Haven to a field goal after the Eagles took over inside the ten after a fumble late in the first half.

IUP had over 34 minutes of possession and were able to keep drives alive, going five for nine on third down. The team visited the red zone twice in the game and capitalized on both chances.

The Crimson Hawks will be back on the turf at Frank Cignetti Field at Miller Stadium on Sept 20 when they take on the Marauders of Millersville. The game will be at 2 pm.
