IUP swim teams turn in strong performances at Pidgeon, Last Chance Invitationals

NEWVILE, Pa. — The IUP swim and dive teams continued the regular season Saturday with strong showings at the John A. Pidgeon Memorial Invitational and the IUP Last Chance Invitational at the Big Springs High School, posting multiple event wins, top finishes and season-best performances ahead of the PSAC Championships.

At the IUP Last Chance Invitational, the Crimson Hawks claimed the combined team title, finishing first with 684 points, while the women's team also took first place with 400 points. The men placed second with 284 points. IUP finished ahead of Bloomsburg, Kutztown and East Stroudsburg in the overall standings.

The Crimson Hawk women were paced by consistent performances across the freestyle and breaststroke events. Tina Cudina recorded a pair of top-two finishes, placing second in the 200-yard freestyle and winning the 50-yard freestyle. Summer Esson added a strong showing in the 200 freestyle, while Kyla Kramer and Zoe Welsh led IUP in the breaststroke events. Benedetta Bellini highlighted the meet with a first-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley.

On the men's side, Alexander Roth won the 200-yard freestyle, while Patrik Kudla captured first place in the 200-yard breaststroke. IUP also saw solid sprint performances from Nick Vaow and Benjamin Adamonis, who both finished among the top competitors in the 100-yard freestyle. The Crimson Hawks added depth points throughout the meet to secure the combined title.

Earlier in the day at the John A. Pidgeon Memorial Invitational, IUP recorded several podium finishes against a competitive field that included West Chester, Bloomsburg and Kutztown. The women's team posted multiple top-10 finishes in the individual medley and backstroke events, while the men earned points in the sprint freestyle and breaststroke races. IUP relay teams also turned in competitive efforts as the Crimson Hawks continued to sharpen race strategy and lineups.
