INDIANA, Pa. -- IUP looks to bounce back from its first loss of the 2026 season as the Crimson Hawks return home for a marquee matchup against top-10 opponent Slippery Rock. The matchup brings together two of the PSAC's premier programs and two of the conference's most established head coaches.
IUP head coach
Paul Tortorella and Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz are two of the longest-tenured coaches in the PSAC, with a combined 19 years as head coach at their respective schools. The two have combined for 167 victories and a .773 winning percentage, building programs that have consistently competed near the top of the PSAC West and on the national stage.
Recent history in the series has favored Slippery Rock, which has won each of the previous three meetings between the programs. Lutz holds a 5-3 advantage in head-to-head matchups against Tortorella, adding another chapter to a rivalry that has regularly carried postseason and PSAC West implications.
The Crimson Hawks have also shown an ability to respond following setbacks during Tortorella's tenure. IUP owns a 12-5 record in games immediately following a loss under Tortorella as it looks to respond after suffering its first defeat of the season.

QUICK NOTES
• Tortorella and Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz are two of the most established coaches in the PSAC, combining for 167 victories and a .773 winning percentage. The two have combined for 19 seasons as head coaches of their respective programs, helping establish IUP and Slippery Rock as two of the premier programs not only in the PSAC, but across Division II.
• Slippery Rock holds a 5-3 record against IUP since
Paul Tortorella became head coach of the Crimson Hawks. The Rock has won each of the previous three matchups, although the series has been tightly contested of late. The last two meetings have been decided by a combined four points.
• IUP has proven resilient following losses under head coach
Paul Tortorella, posting a 12-5 record in games immediately following a defeat. The Crimson Hawks have lost consecutive games just four times during Tortorella's eight-plus seasons at the helm.
• IUP will look to steady the ship after committing five turnovers against Lock Haven last week. The miscues consistently gave the Bald Eagles short fields, and Lock Haven took advantage with three scoring drives of 30 yards or fewer. Two of those scoring drives came in the second half as the turnovers helped swing momentum in Lock Haven's favor.
• IUP is 4-4 against top-10 opponents under head coach
Paul Tortorella, with its most recent matchup coming on the road against Kutztown in last season's PSAC Championship. The Crimson Hawks' last top-10 victory at Miller Stadium came Nov. 12, 2022, when IUP defeated No.3 Shepherd, 24-21.
• Slippery Rock was picked to finish second in the PSAC West entering the 2026 season and currently sits atop the division standings. The Rock has one top-25 victory this season, defeating Minnesota Duluth in an overtime thriller at home in Week Zero. Slippery Rock has continued to build on that early-season victory, establishing itself as one of the top teams in the PSAC West.
STORY LINES
LEADERS OF MEN
The top-20 matchup between IUP and Slippery Rock features two of the premier head coaches in the PSAC, with
Paul Tortorella and Shawn Lutz leading two of the conference's most consistent programs. The two have combined for 19 seasons as head coaches at their respective schools, totaling 167 victories with a combined winning percentage above .770.
Both coaches have built their programs into consistent contenders in the PSAC West and on the national stage. Tortorella is in his ninth season leading the Crimson Hawks after spending 21 seasons as IUP's defensive coordinator, while Lutz has established similar continuity at Slippery Rock. Their programs have regularly found themselves competing for PSAC West championships and NCAA postseason berths during their tenures.
Lutz holds a 5-3 advantage in head-to-head meetings against Tortorella, with Slippery Rock winning each of the past three matchups. Despite The Rock's recent advantage, the rivalry has remained highly competitive. The past two meetings have been decided by a combined four points, adding another chapter to a series that has routinely carried major implications in the PSAC West race.
IUP has also shown it can deliver against highly ranked Slippery Rock teams at George P. Miller Stadium. The last time the Crimson Hawks welcomed a top-10 Rock team to Indiana, IUP earned a 20-12 victory on Oct. 1, 2022. That win helped propel the Crimson Hawks toward a PSAC West title before IUP defeated Shepherd at Miller Stadium to capture the PSAC Championship later that season.
CATCHING A STRAY
IUP has blocked two field goal attempts through the first six games of the season, with sophomore defensive back
Shane Strayhorn responsible for both. Strayhorn has made his presence felt coming off the edge on special teams while also taking on an increased role in the Crimson Hawks' defensive backfield.
Strayhorn has started each of the past three games at cornerback and will be counted on for an even larger role moving forward. Starting cornerback
Keyshawn McCaskill suffered an injury in the first quarter against Lock Haven that will keep him out for the remainder of the season.
The loss of McCaskill will test an IUP secondary that entered the season as one of the strengths of the defense. With Strayhorn already contributing as both a starter and a difference-maker on special teams, the sophomore will be asked to provide continued production as the Crimson Hawks move into the heart of PSAC West play.
SECURE THE PIGSKIN
Last week's game against Lock Haven got off to a tumultuous start for IUP, with the Crimson Hawks fumbling on the opening play. The turnover troubles continued throughout the afternoon as IUP finished with five giveaways, including two lost fumbles and three interceptions.
The performance was a sharp departure from the first five weeks of the season. IUP entered the Lock Haven matchup with just five turnovers through five games before matching that total in a single afternoon against the Bald Eagles.
Protecting the football will be a key for IUP against Slippery Rock. The Rock defense has forced 10 turnovers this season, including seven interceptions, and will look to put pressure on the Crimson Hawks after IUP's season-high five giveaways last week.
A TOP TEN INVASION
The Crimson Hawks are 4-4 against top-10 opponents under head coach
Paul Tortorella, with several of those matchups coming in high-stakes situations. The last time a top-10 Slippery Rock team visited George P. Miller Stadium, IUP earned a 20-12 victory over The Rock in 2022.
Later that season, the Crimson Hawks added another top-10 victory at Miller Stadium, defeating No. 3 Shepherd in the PSAC Championship Game. IUP's most recent matchup against a top-10 opponent came in last season's PSAC Championship Game, when the Crimson Hawks fell on the road to No. 4 Kutztown.
IUP will have another opportunity against a nationally ranked opponent this weekend as the Crimson Hawks welcome Slippery Rock to Miller Stadium for a pivotal PSAC West matchup.
FOOL ME ONCE, DON'T FOOL ME TWICE
IUP has consistently shown the ability to respond following a loss under head coach
Paul Tortorella. In eight-plus seasons with Tortorella at the helm, the Crimson Hawks have lost back-to-back games just four times and have never dropped more than two consecutive contests.
Since Tortorella took over as head coach in 2017, IUP is 12-5 in games immediately following a loss. That track record has helped the Crimson Hawks avoid extended losing stretches while remaining a consistent contender in the PSAC West throughout Tortorella's tenure.
IUP will look to show that resiliency again Saturday following its first loss of the 2026 season against Lock Haven. The Crimson Hawks entered last weekend unbeaten at 5-0 before five turnovers helped the Bald Eagles hand IUP its first setback of the year.
The response will come against one of IUP's biggest rivals, with nationally ranked Slippery Rock visiting George P. Miller Stadium for a pivotal PSAC West matchup. The Crimson Hawks will look to avoid consecutive losses for just the fifth time under Tortorella while keeping themselves in the conference race.
A TRUE RIVALRY
Slippery Rock has won three consecutive games against IUP, with the Crimson Hawks' last victory in the series coming in 2022 at George P. Miller Stadium. Despite The Rock's recent advantage, the rivalry has remained tightly contested, with two of Slippery Rock's three victories during the current streak coming by fewer than three points.
The series between the two PSAC West rivals dates to 1927 and has featured 92 meetings. IUP holds a 48-42-2 advantage in the all-time series, adding another chapter to one of the conference's longest-running rivalries this weekend.
The matchup has remained competitive during the tenures of IUP head coach
Paul Tortorella and Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz. The Crimson Hawks won three of the first five meetings between the two coaches before The Rock responded with victories in each of the past three.
100-FOR-100 INITIATIVE
IUP football is celebrating its unofficial 100th season in 2026 with the launch of the "100 For 100" campaign, an initiative aimed at raising more than $100,000 to support the current and future needs of the program.
IUP's football record book dates to 1927, with the Crimson Hawks compiling 619 victories, 23 PSAC West titles, five PSAC championships, 21 NCAA playoff appearances and two national championship game appearances over nearly a century of football.
The "100 For 100" campaign gives former players, alumni, families, fans and supporters an opportunity to help build on that tradition and provide resources for the program's next century.
