BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Sydney Schmouder scored her first goal of the season and freshman goalkeeper Kaelin Koehler recorded a shutout as No. 9 IUP picked up a 1-0 road victory over No. 5 Bloomsburg on Saturday at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in PSAC play with their second victory over a nationally ranked opponent this season. Bloomsburg dropped to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
After a scoreless opening half, IUP broke through in the third quarter. Grace McGeehan set up Schmouder for the game's only goal at the 38:49 mark, giving the senior midfielder her first goal of the season.
The goal continued a strong week for Schmouder, who entered the matchup after earning PSAC Athlete of the Week honors for her performance in IUP's victory over Millersville.
Koehler and the IUP defense made the one-goal advantage stand. The freshman goalkeeper stopped all three shots on goal she faced over 60 minutes to earn the shutout. Bloomsburg generated three shots in the fourth quarter, but the Crimson Hawks kept the Huskies off the scoreboard.
Bloomsburg finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in penalty corners, but IUP limited the Huskies to just three shots on goal. Hayven Mumma led the Crimson Hawks with two shots, while Schmouder and Lauren Horning accounted for IUP's two shots on goal.
The victory capped a challenging week of top-five road matchups for the Crimson Hawks. IUP battled No. 4 Shippensburg into double overtime Wednesday before responding three days later with the shutout victory over fifth-ranked Bloomsburg.
