Triadelphia, West Virginia — Despite sunny skies outside, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania softball team competed indoors Saturday at the West Virginia Indoor Tournament, falling 6-1 to West Liberty University in game one and 6-0 to University of Findlay in game two.
In the opener, IUP was out-hit 8-4, with Madison Pikula accounting for half of the Crimson Hawks' hits from the leadoff spot. IUP's lone run came on a throwing error by the catcher while attempting to catch Sydni Hoobler stealing.
Senior Kendall Young made the start in the circle, tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out seven Hilltoppers.
Game two proved equally challenging as Findlay limited IUP to just two hits in a shutout victory. Delaney Patella and Kelly Szolek each recorded hits for the Crimson Hawks.
Olivia Hilegas worked four innings in the circle, surrendering six earned runs. Taylor Bumgardner provided relief over the final three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out one.
The Crimson Hawks return to action Sunday at the Highlands Sports Complex, facing University of Indianapolis at 3 p.m., followed by a matchup against Wheeling University at 5:30 p.m.
