Shields Tosses Gem, Crimson Hawks Take Down Salem

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – The Indiana University of Pennsylvania baseball team earned its second win of the season Friday at the Atlantic Crossover, defeating Salem 8-3 behind a five-run ninth inning.

Derrick Shields earned the start for the Crimson Hawks and delivered six innings of one-hit shutout baseball to pick up the win.

IUP out-hit Salem 7-6, with Teague Hoover recording the Crimson Hawks' lone extra-base hit. Hoover also added his first stolen base of the season. Ricardo Aponte continued his strong start to the year, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk. Devon Boyles and Anthony Annichine each added two hits, with Annichine finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Nathan Porath and Addison Clymer combined for three innings of relief. Porath allowed two hits and one earned run over two innings, while Clymer surrendered three hits and two earned runs in the ninth inning.

The Crimson Hawks attacked the strike zone throughout the game, recording five strikeouts without issuing a walk.

IUP returns to action Saturday in Morgantown, West Virginia, where the Crimson Hawks will face Glenville State. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
