GREENSBURG, Pa. — The Indiana (Pa.) women's tennis team opened Super Bowl Sunday with a hard-fought victory over Frostburg State, earning another win in dual-match play.
In doubles action, Annemiek Sterk and Maria Moskaltsova dropped the No. 1 match, while Asel Calbay and Hannah Beitat secured a win at No. 2 doubles. The doubles point came down to the final match, where Ifigeneia Kafka and Lea von Kozierowski faced Frostburg State's Claudia Coombes and Ella Troxwell. After missing a match point earlier, the Crimson Hawk pair rallied to win the deciding set 6-4 and clinch the doubles point for IUP.
Singles play featured several competitive matchups. Von Kozierowski held off a late push from Frostburg State's Julia Ramos Bentham to win 6-1, 7-5. Calbay and Charliz Tabili picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, while Kafka battled past Alyssa Kush in three sets after dropping the opener. Isabelle Oikawa Torres and Sterk added victories to complete singles play.
The win improves IUP to 3-2 in dual matches, with victories in three of its past four contests.
The Crimson Hawks will travel to New York next weekend for matches against Niagara on Feb. 13 and Buffalo on Feb. 14.
