SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. — The Indiana (Pa.) softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday against Shepherd University and Frostburg State University as the teams battled through rainy conditions.
In game one against Shepherd, the Rams carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning before the Crimson Hawks tied the contest. Ruby Singleton delivered a single through the left side to bring home the tying run, one of seven IUP hits in the game.
Delaney Patella led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, adding a walk and a run scored. The senior third baseman has continued her strong start to the season, batting .382 with five extra-base hits, including two in the contest. Center fielder Maddie Griffin also added an extra-base hit for the Crimson Hawks.
Junior Kendall Young started in the circle and took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over six innings while striking out two.
In game two against Frostburg State, IUP jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to another Patella hit followed by a Singleton groundout. However, the Bobcats responded by tying the game in the fourth inning and taking control with a three-run fifth.
The Crimson Hawks attempted a late comeback in the seventh when senior catcher Reagan Rand singled home two runs and advanced to second as the potential tying run. IUP could not bring her home.
Defensively, IUP committed three errors in the game. Taylor Bumgardner took the loss after pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits. Young worked the final 1 2/3 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits.
The Crimson Hawks will look to find consistency as the early season continues. IUP returns to action March 11 on the road against Millersville University, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
