HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The IUP women's tennis team picked up two victories Monday during its spring break trip, defeating Chowan 4-0 before earning a 6-1 win over Thomas More.
Against Chowan, the Crimson Hawks secured the doubles point with strong play in the opening portion of the match. The duo of Hannah Beitat and Asel Calbay won at No. 1 doubles after their opponents retired, while Lea von Kozierowski and Ifigeneia Kafka posted a dominant 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. Chowan narrowly took the No. 2 doubles match in a 7-6 (8-6) decision.
IUP carried the momentum into singles play to clinch the match. Charliz Tabili earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and Kafka followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Isabelle Oikawa Torres secured the deciding point with a walkover at No. 6 singles as the Crimson Hawks reached four points to end the match.
Later in the day, IUP continued its strong performance with a 6-1 victory over Thomas More. The Crimson Hawks again opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles contests to gain an early advantage.
In singles play, IUP controlled most of the lineup. Lea von Kozierowski earned a win at No. 1 singles, while Asel Calbay and Charliz Tabili added victories in the middle of the lineup. Ifigeneia Kafka and Isabelle Oikawa Torres also secured points for the Crimson Hawks to help seal the match.
The pair of wins continued a strong start to IUP's spring break schedule as the Crimson Hawks looked to build momentum during their trip in Hilton Head.
