IUP stays hot with sweep, Pikula sets record

CALIFORNIA, Pa. — The IUP softball team capped a 4-0 day for the Crimson Hawks' diamond sports with a sweep of California (Pa.), outscoring the Vulcans 15-4 across two games in 10-3 and 5-1 victories.

The highlight of the day came from senior second baseman Madison Pikula, who set the program record with her 19th career triple on a line drive to left field in the second inning. Pikula broke the previous mark held by Kim Shoemaker, who recorded 18 triples in 124 games from 1990-93.

Pikula's triple extended IUP's early lead to 3-0. She finished Game 1 going 4 for 5 with three RBIs. Right fielder Ruby Singleton also had a standout performance, going 4 for 4 with three RBIs. Three of Singleton's hits went for extra bases, all doubles. Emily Miller and Maddie Griffin each added multiple hits, with Griffin driving in two runs.

Junior Kendall Young earned the win in Game 1, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits. The victory was her seventh of the season.

In Game 2, Griffin and Miller each recorded two hits again, while Singleton added two RBIs and a triple, bringing her total to four extra-base hits on the day. Designated player Jaycee Haidze went 2 for 3 with an RBI and reached base three times, drawing a walk.

Freshman Taylor Bumgardner went the distance in the circle, allowing one earned run to earn her team-leading ninth win.

With the sweep, IUP improved to 20-16 overall and 10-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West play. The second-place Crimson Hawks will travel to Greensburg on Saturday to face Seton Hill in a matchup of two of the top teams in the division. Seton Hill enters after being swept by Pitt-Johnstown, with Saturday's doubleheader marking its third in as many days.
