Big bats lead IUP past Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. — The IUP softball team continued its strong play in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action, sweeping Seton Hill on Saturday with 14-0 and 12-3 victories.

The Crimson Hawks scored 26 runs across the doubleheader while allowing just three, taking advantage of a Seton Hill team playing its third doubleheader in as many days.

IUP jumped out quickly in Game 1, building a 9-0 lead after two innings. Six different starters recorded RBIs during the early surge. Reagan Rand, Jess Cekada and Jaycee Haidze each added to their totals later in the game, with Cekada driving in a season-high four runs. Rand and Haidze each finished with two RBIs.

Briana Pusateri also contributed two RBIs, driving in Rand and Emily Miller with a single during a four-run second inning.

Kendall Young earned her eighth win of the season, tossing a five-inning complete-game shutout with three strikeouts.

In Game 2, IUP scored in all five innings, including three runs in both the third and fifth. Cekada, Rand and Pusateri each drove in two more runs, bringing their totals to six, four and four RBIs, respectively. The trio combined to drive in 14 of IUP's 26 runs on the day.

Freshman Taylor Bumgardner earned her team-leading 10th win, improving to 10-9 after allowing three runs — two earned — on seven hits over five innings.

With the sweep, IUP improved to 12-4 in PSAC play and sits alone in second place in the West, two games behind Slippery Rock. The Crimson Hawks have now swept six of their last seven conference doubleheaders.

IUP will travel to West Liberty for a midweek nonconference game before heading to Clarion on Friday, April 17. The Crimson Hawks will then host Slippery Rock on Saturday in a key divisional matchup. The game will also serve as IUP's Strikeout for Cancer event.
