IUP drops doubleheader to Clarion

BUTLER, Pa. — IUP and Clarion entered Sunday's doubleheader separated by a half-game in the PSAC standings. The four-game weekend series opened with a 3-2 walk-off win for Clarion, followed by an 11-1 victory for the Golden Eagles at Pullman Park.

Derrick Shields threw a strong outing in Game 1 but fell four outs short of a complete game. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. IUP carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning before Clarion tied the game on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.

Yaniel Heredia relieved Shields and pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing the game-winning double to left field.

At the plate, David Kessler and Camden Rhude hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning. IUP and Clarion each recorded seven hits, with Kessler and Rhude combining for four. Carter Kirsch added the only other extra-base hit for the Crimson Hawks.

Clarion used a six-run fifth inning to take control in Game 2. The Golden Eagles also scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead and added three more in the sixth.

Cameron Copple took the loss for IUP, pitching four innings and allowing three runs. He walked six and hit one batter among 15 batters faced. Five relievers combined to pitch the final two innings.

IUP finished with four hits, all singles, compared with 10 for Clarion.

The Golden Eagles will visit Indiana on Saturday, with first pitch of Game 1 set for 11:30 a.m. The Crimson Hawks will honor 13 seniors between games.
