INDIANA, Pa. — The IUP baseball team split its four-game series with Clarion by sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, winning 9-2 and 13-6 after dropping both games Friday.
IUP entered the day battling Clarion for playoff positioning and created separation in the standings. The Crimson Hawks also recognized 13 seniors before the games.
In Game 1, Nathan Mankoski delivered his best outing of the season, pitching a seven-inning complete game and allowing two runs on five hits.
Senior Erik Rhodes led the offense with three extra-base hits, including two doubles and a triple. David Kessler added a double.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when IUP scored twice. Rhodes drove in two runs with a triple, and leadoff hitter Ricardo Aponte later scored on an error.
The Crimson Hawks added seven runs over the final three innings to pull away. Camden Rhude went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Michael Kramer and Kessler also had multiple hits.
In Game 2, IUP broke the game open in the first inning, scoring seven runs off Clarion starter Braden Fetherholf, who recorded just one out. The Crimson Hawks added multiple runs in the third and fourth innings to extend the lead.
Aponte went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Rhude added two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Senior Jonathan Simpson finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
IUP used six pitchers in Game 2, with Emilio Rodriguez earning the win after pitching 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and allowing one hit.
IUP returns to action Tuesday at Point Park in Pittsburgh. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
