SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Indiana University of Pennsylvania could not recover from a decisive second-quarter run, falling to No. 7 Slippery Rock 17-7 in PSAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
IUP (7-8, 4-4 PSAC) was even with Slippery Rock at 2-2 after the opening quarter, showing early composure on the road. The Crimson Hawks generated balanced offense in the first, matching the nationally ranked Rock goal for goal.
The game turned in the second quarter, however, as Slippery Rock (15-0, 8-0) scored seven unanswered goals to take a 9-2 lead into halftime. The run extended into the third quarter, where IUP managed just one goal while Slippery Rock added six more, stretching the margin to 15-3.
Despite the deficit, IUP responded with its strongest stretch in the fourth quarter, outscoring Slippery Rock 4-2 to close the game with momentum.
Macenzie Haragos, Leah Moyer and Julia Steere each scored two goals to lead the Crimson Hawks, with Haragos adding two assists for a team-high four points. Mallorie LaGamba also found the net and contributed an assist.
IUP's early defensive effort kept the game within reach, but extended scoring droughts in the middle quarters proved costly against one of the top teams in the conference.
The Crimson Hawks will look to bounce back April 22 when they return home to face Lock Haven in PSAC play.
