INDIANA, Pa. — IUP softball moved one step closer to the PSAC West regular-season title Friday, sweeping Pitt-Johnstown in a conference doubleheader at Podbielski Field with wins of 7-1 and 9-0.
After another weather-related location change, the Crimson Hawks returned home and made the most of it, using strong pitching and steady offense to secure the sweep.
In Game 1, Kendall Young dominated in the circle, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning before surrendering a solo home run to Pitt-Johnstown pitcher Mia Smith. Young earned her 13th win of the season, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
At the plate, IUP totaled 11 hits, including four for extra bases. Reagan Rand launched a home run in the second inning, while Jess Cekada also homered to help keep pressure on the Mountain Cats.
The two teams combined for just four strikeouts in the opener.
In Game 2, the Crimson Hawks again controlled the action offensively, recording 10 hits — all singles — and manufacturing runs throughout the afternoon. IUP scored nine times, with seven runs coming during extended third and fourth innings.
Taylor Bumgardner earned her 15th win of the season and another shutout, allowing four hits while striking out five.
IUP returns to Podbielski Field on Saturday for its final PSAC doubleheader of the regular season against Pitt-Johnstown. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 1 p.m., with Senior Day festivities taking place between games.
