INDIANA, Pa. – First-time collegiate goal scorers Carolina Gutierrez and Presley McGowan lifted IUP women's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Lock Haven on Wednesday at South Campus Field.
The Crimson Hawks remained unbeaten at home and picked up their second victory in four matches behind a strong opening half and an early second-half game-winner from Gutierrez.
IUP controlled possession for much of the first half, consistently working in the Lock Haven defensive third and limiting the Bald Eagles' opportunities.
McGowan broke through for the Crimson Hawks in the opening half, finding the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career to give IUP the advantage.
Gutierrez followed with a milestone of her own immediately after halftime. She scored in the 47th minute to extend IUP's lead to 2-0, with the goal ultimately standing as the game-winner.
Lock Haven responded less than a minute later when Sydney Linus scored to pull the Bald Eagles within one.
The visitors applied more pressure in the second half, but IUP held firm defensively to secure the 2-1 result.
The Crimson Hawks finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on goal. Lock Haven goalkeeper Devon Mason made six saves.
Sarah Gatz earned the victory in goal for IUP, making one save. Lock Haven's second-half goal was the only other Bald Eagles attempt on frame.
