MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Kasey Rieger scored less than three minutes into overtime Saturday night, lifting No. 8 IUP field hockey to a 2-1 road victory over No. 10 Millersville at Chryst Field.
The Crimson Hawks remained unbeaten at 5-0 overall in their first top-10 matchup of the season. Millersville dropped to 3-3 overall.
After a scoreless opening half, Millersville struck first when Zoe Angelinas found the back of the cage at the 37:43 mark of the third quarter.
IUP needed less than two minutes to answer.
Lilly Fringer converted a penalty stroke at 39:26, tying the game at 1-1 with her fifth goal of the season. The goal continued a strong stretch for Fringer, who scored in each of IUP's previous two victories against D'Youville and Coker.
Neither side broke through in the fourth quarter, sending IUP to overtime for the first time this season.
Rieger needed just 2:47 of the extra period to end it, scoring her team-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Crimson Hawks their fifth consecutive victory.
IUP controlled much of the offensive action, finishing with a 16-3 advantage in shots and putting nine attempts on goal. The Crimson Hawks also generated 11 penalty corners compared to five for the Marauders.
Reiger led the attack with six shots, including four on goal, while Grace McGeehan added four attempts. Fringer put both of her shots on frame.
Celeste Pagliaroli played all 62:47 in the cage, making one save and earning her fifth victory of the season. Millersville goalkeeper Katherine Hanlon finished with seven saves.
The victory marked another strong defensive showing for IUP, which has surrendered just two goals through its first five matches of the season.
