GREENSBURG, Pa. – For the third consecutive match, the IUP women's soccer team generated more chances than its opponent, this time against Seton Hill. However, the Crimson Hawks remain in search of their first goal of the season after falling to the Griffins, 1-0, in PSAC West action Wednesday.
Through three matches, IUP has surrendered just two goals while outshooting its opponents, 35-21. The Crimson Hawks rank among the top five teams in the PSAC in goals-against average while sitting fourth in the conference in shots.
Wednesday's match was originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. but was moved to noon due to the September heat wave impacting Western Pennsylvania. Despite the conditions and elevated temperatures on the turf playing surface, IUP controlled possession for much of the opening half.
The Crimson Hawks limited Seton Hill to just one shot on goal in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Kiley Hassinger, making her first start of the season, stopped the attempt and finished the match with two saves.
Seton Hill broke through in the second half on a set piece just outside the box. Kilee Coatney provided a touch on the free kick to set up Maddie Teakle, who found the left side of the net for the lone goal of the match.
IUP continued to create opportunities, forcing the Seton Hill goalkeeper to make five saves, including three in the second half. Carolina Gutierrez and Ayla Cook combined for five shots, with three reaching the goalkeeper. Freshman Rylei Rastoka recorded IUP's other shot on goal.
The Crimson Hawks return home Saturday for another tough PSAC West test, hosting nationally ranked Gannon at South Campus Field. The Golden Knights opened their season with a 2-0 victory over Seton Hill and host Clarion on Wednesday night before making the trip to Indiana.
Kickoff between IUP and Gannon is scheduled for 1 p.m.
