Golf Returns to Action at Sunnehanna Collegiate; Second Round Suspended by Darkness

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – After losing a week of competition due to course conditions, the IUP men's golf team returned to action Monday at the Pitt-Johnstown Sunnehanna Collegiate at Sunnehanna Country Club.

The Crimson Hawks were scheduled to play 36 holes Monday, but play was suspended due to darkness during the second round. IUP completed approximately 15 holes of its second round before play was halted.

IUP battled tough conditions during the opening round, carding a 13-over team score to sit 10th after 18 holes.

Trevor Todd led the Crimson Hawks with an even-par 70. Todd battled through four bogeys on the front nine and made the turn at three over before responding with three birdies on the back nine to get back to even par.

Ben De Castro, competing as an individual, also put together a strong opening round. De Castro carded a 2-over 72, highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole.

Senior Jon Vinge opened with a 3-over 73, while freshman Sam Bishop posted a 2-over 72. Zaiden Dennis and freshman Eli Bintrim rounded out IUP's opening-round scores.

The par-5 11th hole proved particularly favorable for the Crimson Hawks throughout Monday. Three of IUP's four scoring players in the opening round recorded birdies on No. 11, with no Crimson Hawk carding worse than par on the hole.

That success carried into the second round.

Through approximately 15 holes, Todd and Vinge were even par for their rounds, while Dennis and De Castro were each one under. Bishop and Bintrim sat two over.

Bintrim provided the highlight of the second round, recording the first eagle of his collegiate career on the par-5 11th.

The eagle continued IUP's impressive performance on the hole. Through 12 combined attempts Monday, the Crimson Hawks recorded five birdies and Bintrim's eagle, playing No. 11 at a combined seven under par.

Todd remained the highest Crimson Hawk on the individual leaderboard when play was suspended, sitting tied for 13th at even par. De Castro was tied for 17th at one over while competing as an individual, followed by Vinge in a tie for 24th at three over and Bishop in a tie for 29th at four over.

Dennis sat tied for 52nd at seven over, while Bintrim was tied for 79th at 11 over.
