Junior baseball player Scott Hess has been named an IUP Athlete of the Week in an announcement made Monday for the week ending Sunday, April 17.
Hess’s hot bat helped IUP split a four-game series with California (Pa.), as the junior went a combined eight-for-14 with five doubles, two homeruns and eight RBI. He also scored five runs and had a slugging percent of 1.357.
In the first game, Hess went two-for-two while smacking two doubles and driving in a run in the Crimson Hawks’ 10-5 loss. Later that day, he went two-for-three with a two-run homerun in the first inning and a two-run, tiebreaking double in the fourth as IUP was able to slip past the Vulcans, 9-8, in eight innings.
On the year, Hess is batting .272 with four homeruns, 23 RBI and 10 doubles. He’s tied for the team lead in homers, while his .533 slugging percentage is third-best.
