Box Score
INDIANA, PA – Safety
Andre Henderson (Erie/Strong Vincent) totaled eight tackles, adding a forced fumble and an interception, leading a defense that forced five turnovers, and
Harvie Tuck (Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) ran for 121 yards, the seventh straight game he's broken the century mark, as the Crimson Hawks pulled the upset of 18th-ranked Edinboro with a 19-0 shutout over their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division rivals on Saturday afternoon on Homecoming at IUP.
The win was the second straight shutout victory for the Crimson Hawks over Edinboro, as IUP won on the road last year, 18-0. The Fighting Scots entered the game with one of the top offenses in the PSAC, averaging nearly 37 points and 372 yards per game, but were held scoreless for the first time this season, as the Crimson Hawks held them to just 115 yards of total offense.
In addition to his seventh straight 100-yard output, Tuck entered IUP's top 10 in career rushing yards, as he now has 2,185 in his two-plus seasons, good for ninth all-time. He passed Tink Stennet, who had 2,125 yards from 1997-2000, and
Tobias Robinson (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), who rushed for 2,179 from 2006, 2008-2010.
After a scoreless first that included fumbles by both teams, the Crimson Hawks forced Edinboro into a three-and-out at its own 30-yard line, but the snap on fourth down sailed over the punter's and went out of the back of the end zone for a safety as IUP took the early 2-0 lead.
After a three-and-out by the Crimson Hawks, the turnover party continued, starting with a fumble by Edinboro recovered by IUP's
Mark Jackson (Canton, OH/McKinley) on the second play of the drive. IUP then fumbled on the very next play, as Edinboro took over, before the Fighting Scots gave it back to IUP when Henderson picked off a Cody Harris pass at the Edinboro 48-yard line.
In the four drives after the safety, IUP and Edinboro ran a total of eight plays, turning it over three times.
The Crimson Hawks put together a drive after the Henderson pick, putting Tuck to work with seven rushes, as IUP got down to the Fighting Scots 10-yard line with 22 seconds left before half.
On second and goal, quarterback
Mike Box (Lawrenceville, GA/Collins Hill) play actioned to Tuck, rolled to his right, and found
Pat Brewer (Coatesville/Coatesville) cutting across the end zone for a touchdown. Brett Ulllman's extra point made the score 9-0 as the Crimson Hawks took the lead into the break.
It didn't take long for IUP to add to that lead in the third, as Box hooked up with tight end
Jon Ditto (Monroeville/Gateway) down the right sideline on a short pass on third-and-four, and Ditto did the rest, rumbling down the field for the 56-yard touchdown pass to break open the game.
On the ensuing Edinboro drive, Harris would get picked off for the second time, when Jerrell McFadden stepped in front of his pass on the second play of the drive to give IUP great field position at the Fighting Scots 41-yard line.
Keeping it out on the ground, the Crimson Hawks advanced to the 28-yard line, where Ullman would connect on a 46-yard field goal, the longest of his young career, to give IUP the 19-0 lead and eventual victory.
The Crimson Hawks dominated in every offensive category, outgaining Edinboro on the ground, 216-78; through the air, 79-37; in third down conversions, 7-of-14 to 2-of-10; and most importantly, in time of possession, 36:19 to 23:41.
Harris finished the day 7-of-12 for just 28 yards and two picks while Drew Herrell was the leading rusher for Edinboro, gaining 54 yards on 11 carries. Ryan Skelton, the PSAC's leading tackler, totaled nine for Edinboro, while Branden Williams had five tackles, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble.
Box, who entered the game for injured starter
Pat Smith (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg), didn't throw a lot but completed 3-of-4 passes for 73 yards and the two scores, in his second career action at IUP. Smith finished 2-of-5 for six yards.
Ditto was one of three Crimson Hawks to snag passes, catching two for 65 and his score. Tuck's 121 yards came on 32 carries, while
James Johnson (Philadelphia/Glen Mills) added 64 yards on 15 carries.
Jackson,
Errol Brewster (Harlem, NY/Springbrook (MD)) and
Larry Gooden (McKeesport/McKeesport) all had fumble recoveries, with Jackson and Henderson forced one each. Gooden led the Crimson Hawks with nine total tackles on the day, while Henderson had eight, Alex Berdahl tallied seven, and Jackson,
Johnny Franco (Altoona/Tyrone) and Terrell Washington each adding five.
The Crimson Hawks, now 2-2, 1-1 in the PSAC West, will hit the road for the next two weeks, starting first next Saturday as they travel to Erie to take on Mercyhurst. Kickoff is set for noon.
