Box Score
LOCK HAVEN, PA – IUP became the 17th NCAA Division II football program to reach 500 wins with the help of
Pat Brewer (Coatesville/Coatesville)'s 204 receiving yards and
James Johnson (Philadelphia/Glen Mills)'s four rushing touchdowns in the Crimson Hawks 56-6 blowout victory at Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The win makes IUP the third school to reach 500 this season, following Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri State. The win also comes in the program's 775th all-time game and in its 82nd season, the youngest program in the top 25 victories list.
The Crimson Hawks now sit 17th all-time in victories, right behind Northwest Missouri State, with a 500-252-23 record, a .660 winning percentage.
IUP dominated in all aspects, holding a 423-272 advantage in total yards on 27 less plays, without punting a single time and picking off five Lock Haven passes.
It didn't take long for the Crimson Hawks (6-3, 5-2) to open up their 500th win with a score, as
Pat Smith (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) hooked up with Brewer on a 69-yard touchdown toss on the very first play from scrimmage. After a Lock Haven drive went nowhere,
Javon Rowan (Erie/Cathedral Prep) returned a punt 43 yards to the Bald Eagles 25-yard line, ultimately setting up a 14-yard touchdown run by Johnson to put IUP up 14-0 less than four minutes into the game.
Johnson gave the Crimson Hawks a three-touchdown lead early in the second quarter when he picked up a fumble by Smith and rumbled 37 yards for a touchdown at the 14:19 mark. The play came after Smith hooked up with Brewer again on a 48-yard pass to the Lock Haven 33-yard line, the first play of the drive.
The very next Bald Eagles drive started with a 67-yard pass play from Jarryd Burkett to Devin Sims, however, a holding penalty negated the long gain, eventually leading to an
Andre Henderson (Erie/Strong Vincent) interception at the Lock Haven 44-yard line.
Four plays later, after a couple of big plays from Brewer and Johnson, the latter would punch it in from six yards out to give the Crimson Hawks a commanding 28-0 with 11:13 on the clock in the second.
Henderson came up big again on the ensuing Lock Haven drive, picking off a Burkett pass and sprinting 81 yards, running out of steam at the Bald Eagles eight-yard line. That interception led to a
Harvie Tuck (Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) touchdown run on the following play, and the
Brett Ullman (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) extra point made it 35-0 Crimson Hawks with 7:08 remaining.
The following IUP drive included yet another long Smith-Brewer hookup, this one going 28 yards to the Lock Haven 37-yard line. Johnson then covered the rest of the way for the Crimson Hawks, carrying the ball nine yards before an 18-yard jaunt put him in the end zone for the fourth time, and giving IUP a 42-0 lead going into halftime.
The Crimson Hawks went over 50 points early in the third quarter, when
Marvens Toussaint (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Port Charlotte) picked off a Burkett pass at the Bald Eagles 29-yard line, returning it all the way for the score as IUP went up 56-0.
The rest of the third quarter included another IUP interception, this one by Mike Meriweather, and another IUP touchdown, a 31-yard passing score from Smith to
Terrill Barnes (Gettysburg/Gettysburg).
The Bald Eagles got a late score, going 81 yards on 19 plays, getting a 24-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett Kratzer to Jay Hartman with less than one minute left.
Kratzer finished 17-of-39 for Lock Haven, throwing for 167 yards and that score. Hartman caught four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown and Jesse Hoover added five grabs for 43 yards.
Brewer's 204 yards are fifth most for a single game in IUP history, getting those yards on five catches. Smith finished 7-of-9 for a season-high 241 yards and two scores while Johnson posted 97 yards on the ground.
Teddy Blakeman (Penn Hills/Penn Hills) added 56 yards rushing while Tuck had 31 yards.
Defensively for the Crimson Hawks, Henderson had five tackles and those two picks, while
Jake Alberts (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) led the team with eight total stops.
Errol Brewster (Harlem, NY/Springbrook (MD)) played in Lock Haven's backfield all day, posting three tackles of loss.
IUP will go for its seventh win of the year, the most since 2008, next Saturday when the Crimson Hawks travel to West Chester to face the Golden Rams. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
