GAME NINE: CRIMSON HAWKS AT GANNON

ERIE, Pa. -- IUP football will play its 100th game under head coach Paul Tortorella when the Crimson Hawks travel to Erie to face Gannon at McConnell Family Stadium. The matchup comes at a pivotal point in the season for IUP as the Crimson Hawks look to get back in the win column following three consecutive losses.

The current three-game skid is the first of Tortorella's nine-year tenure as head coach. Prior to this season, IUP had never lost more than two consecutive games since Tortorella took over the program in 2017.

Gannon enters the matchup with some momentum after earning its first victory of the season, a 31-14 win over Edinboro. The Golden Knights will now look to carry that success back to McConnell Family Stadium, where they are searching for their first home victory in more than a year.

Gannon's last home win came Oct. 4, 2025, when the Golden Knights knocked off then-No. 14 Slippery Rock. Since the start of last season, Gannon is 1-8 at home, providing IUP an opportunity to end its own losing streak while reaching a milestone in Tortorella's tenure.

QUICK NOTES

• IUP has held the advantage in meetings between the current head coaches of the two programs, winning three of the five matchups during that stretch. The Crimson Hawks have won each of the past two meetings against Gannon after dropping the previous two games in the series and will look to extend their winning streak against the Golden Knights to three games when the teams meet at McConnell Family Stadium.

• IUP is looking to respond following one of the most lopsided losses in program history, a 49-0 setback to California (Pa.) in the 17th Coal Bowl. The Crimson Hawks were held to just 89 yards of total offense in the loss, the fewest in a single game in program history, as IUP suffered its third consecutive defeat for the first time under head coach Paul Tortorella.

• IUP quarterback Mason Maggs opened the season with an impressive stretch, throwing 17 touchdown passes compared to just three interceptions over the first five games. The redshirt senior has faced more adversity during IUP's current three-game skid, throwing seven interceptions compared to four touchdowns over the past three contests. Last week against California (Pa.) also marked the first time this season Maggs did not throw multiple touchdown passes in a game. Maggs will look to regain his early-season form as the Crimson Hawks travel to Gannon this weekend.

• Gannon enters the weekend at the bottom of the PSAC West standings with a 1-7 overall record and a 1-4 mark in divisional play. IUP currently sits fifth in the division at 5-3 overall and 2-3 against PSAC West opponents. The Crimson Hawks will look to get back in the win column and improve their position in the divisional standings with three games remaining in the regular season.

STORY LINES

THE CENTURY MARK

Head coach Paul Tortorella will reach another milestone this weekend, becoming the fourth head coach in IUP history to lead the Crimson Hawks for 100 games. Tortorella enters his 100th game with a 73-26 record across nine seasons at the helm of the program.

Tortorella's .737 winning percentage ranks second among IUP head coaches who have coached at least 100 games with the program. His success has helped keep the Crimson Hawks among the top programs in the PSAC throughout his tenure, with IUP consistently competing for PSAC West titles and NCAA postseason appearances.

Among all head coaches in program history, regardless of games coached, Tortorella's .737 winning percentage ranks fifth. He has also climbed to third on IUP's career wins list with 73 victories entering this weekend.

Tortorella's connection to the program extends well beyond his nine seasons as head coach. He spent 22 seasons as IUP's defensive coordinator before taking over as head coach in 2017, making him one of the longest-tenured members of the Crimson Hawks football program.

LOOKING TO REBOUND

IUP quarterback Mason Maggs opened the season as one of the most productive passers in the PSAC, throwing 17 touchdown passes compared to just three interceptions through the first five games. The redshirt senior threw multiple touchdown passes in each of his first five starts, including three games with four touchdown passes, while helping lead the Crimson Hawks to a 5-0 start.

Maggs and the IUP passing attack have faced more adversity during the Crimson Hawks' current three-game losing streak. Over the past three games, Maggs has thrown four touchdown passes compared to seven interceptions after throwing just three interceptions over the first five weeks combined. The stretch has coincided with IUP dropping from 5-0 to 5-3 after losses to Lock Haven, Slippery Rock and California (Pa.).

Last week's Coal Bowl loss at California marked the first game this season in which Maggs did not throw multiple touchdown passes. He will look to regain the form that helped fuel IUP's unbeaten start when the Crimson Hawks travel to Erie to face Gannon at McConnell Family Stadium.

RESPONSE NEEDED

IUP will look to turn the page following a 49-0 loss to California (Pa.) in the 17th Coal Bowl, one of the most lopsided setbacks in program history. The Crimson Hawks were limited to a program-low 89 yards of total offense as the Vulcans kept IUP off the scoreboard throughout the afternoon. It marked the first time the Crimson Hawks had been shut out in more than two decades, with the previous occurrence coming in a 27-0 loss to Bloomsburg during the 2005 season.

The loss continued an unfamiliar stretch for a program that opened the season with five consecutive victories. IUP has since dropped three straight games to Lock Haven, Slippery Rock and California (Pa.), marking the first three-game losing streak under head coach Paul Tortorella. Prior to the current skid, the Crimson Hawks had never lost more than two consecutive games since Tortorella took over the program in 2017.

Despite the recent results, IUP enters the final three weeks of the regular season with an opportunity to change the direction of its season. The Crimson Hawks will look to rediscover the form that helped them race out to a 5-0 start, beginning Saturday with a trip to Erie to face Gannon at McConnell Family Stadium. A victory would snap the longest losing streak of the Tortorella era and provide IUP with momentum before returning to George P. Miller Stadium for its final two games of the regular season.

UNCHARTED TERRITORY

IUP has not lost to Gannon since 2023, when the Golden Knights completed a stretch of two consecutive victories over the Crimson Hawks. IUP has since turned the series back in its favor, winning each of the past two meetings, and will look to make it three straight against Gannon when the teams meet Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium.

The matchup comes as the Crimson Hawks look to end an unfamiliar stretch under head coach Paul Tortorella. IUP enters the weekend on a three-game losing streak, the longest single-season skid since Tortorella took over as head coach in 2017. Prior to the current stretch, the Crimson Hawks had never lost more than two consecutive games during Tortorella's tenure.

IUP will now look to avoid its first four-game losing streak in more than 15 years. The last time the Crimson Hawks dropped four consecutive games came during the 2010 season, when IUP lost four straight from Oct. 2 through Oct. 30. A victory Saturday would not only end the current skid, but also continue IUP's recent success against the Golden Knights.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE NUMBERS

Gannon ranks inside the top five in the PSAC in just two statistical categories this season — net punting and time of possession — providing IUP with an opportunity to create advantages in several areas of Saturday's matchup. The Crimson Hawks will look to generate splash plays in all three phases as they attempt to get back in the win column following three consecutive losses.

Special teams has provided IUP with opportunities to flip the field throughout the season. The Crimson Hawks rank fourth in the PSAC with an average of 23.5 yards per kickoff return, giving the offense the potential to begin drives with favorable field position. IUP has also received consistent production from its specialists, providing another avenue for the Crimson Hawks to impact the game outside of the offense.

Defensively, IUP has been at its best when opponents have moved inside the 20-yard line. The Crimson Hawks rank second in the PSAC in red-zone defense, limiting the damage when opposing offenses have been able to put together sustained drives. That ability could be important against a Gannon team that ranks among the conference leaders in time of possession.

After being held scoreless last week for the first time since 2005, IUP will look for contributions from every phase of the game. The Crimson Hawks enter the weekend averaging 27.0 points per game and will look to pair an offensive rebound with impact plays on defense and special teams as they attempt to snap their three-game losing streak.

RIGHT THE SHIP

Losing seasons have been rare for IUP under head coach Paul Tortorella, with the Crimson Hawks losing more than three games in a season just twice since he took over the program in 2017. One of those seasons came last year, when IUP still overcame its regular-season setbacks to capture the PSAC West championship and advance to the postseason.

With three games remaining on the 2026 schedule, the Crimson Hawks will look to finish the season strong and build momentum down the stretch. IUP will play two of its final three games at George P. Miller Stadium, giving the Crimson Hawks an opportunity to close the year in front of their home crowd. IUP will look to begin that final push this weekend at Gannon before returning home for two of its final contests.

100-FOR-100 INITIATIVE

IUP football is celebrating its unofficial 100th season in 2026 with the launch of the "100 For 100" campaign, an initiative aimed at raising more than $100,000 to support the current and future needs of the program.

IUP's football record book dates to 1927, with the Crimson Hawks compiling 619 victories, 23 PSAC West titles, five PSAC championships, 21 NCAA playoff appearances and two national championship game appearances over nearly a century of football.

The "100 For 100" campaign gives former players, alumni, families, fans and supporters an opportunity to help build on that tradition and provide resources for the program's next century.
