The IUP baseball team jumped out early scoring four runs in the top of the first inning to earn an 11-5 win in the opening game over Shippensburg, but the Raiders took game two 7-3 as the teams split a doubleheader.
Frank Sirolli (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) opened the first game with a double to left center field and scored on a
Vern Powell (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) single that lead to a big first inning.
Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny) keyed that rally with a two-out, two-run single making the score 4-0.
Chris Douglas (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan) pitched his way out of a bases loaded jam in the first and was rewarded when
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) drove in two runs with a two-out single in the top of the second.
Douglas picked up the win for IUP going two innings surrendering just one hit and issuing two walks.
In the second game the IUP bats cooled down as the Crimson Hawks were held off the board until the fifth inning when Powell hit a a sacrifice fly to plate
Andrew Welch (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic).
The Crimson Hawks came back and scored twice in the seventh but Powell grounded into a double play effectively ending the Hawks comeback bid.
Mitch Perez (Eldersburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph) took his first loss of the year going on inning giving up three runs two earned on two hits and two walks while striking out three.
Powell finished the day 5 for 7 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Sirolli went 4 for 7 and scored two runs.
The Crimson Hawks open PSAC West play when they travel to Lock Haven on Friday before hosting the Bald Eagles at South Campus on Saturday at 1:00.
