Chris Douglas (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan) flirted with a no-hitter before settling for a two-hit shutout, and
Ryan Sylvia (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) broke the game open with his first college home run in the sixth, lifting IUP to a 6-0 win over Lock Haven in the opener of a PSAC West doubleheader Saturday at Owen Dougherty Field.
The Bald Eagles then used a six-run third inning to post a 7-4 victory in the nightcap. The teams also split a doubleheader on Friday at Lock Haven and are both 2-2 in the PSAC West. The Crimson Hawks are 10-10 overall while the Bald Eagles are 11-8.
Douglas did not allow a hit through five innings before Cory Dorman hit a hard grounder off Douglas' foot to lead off the sixth. He scrambled to his right but could not make a play on the ball as Dorman reached on the infield single to break up the no-hitter.
Douglas also hit a batter in the inning but kept the shutout and 1-0 lead intact when he induced Brian Kochik to ground into an inning-ending double play. Jordan Miller added a pinch hit single with two outs in the seventh for the only other Lock Haven hit.
Bald Eagle starter Tyler Golden also took a no-hitter into the sixth but allowed a run in the fourth.
Vern Powell (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) struck out but reached on a wild pitch to lead and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs Powell took off when a pitch bounced in front of the plate and scored when Kochik tried to throw Powell out at third.
It stayed a one-run game until the sixth when IUP scored five times, including a sacrifice fly by
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown), an RBI single by
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) and a three-run homer to right by Sylvia.
The Crimson Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game before the Lock Haven bats produced six hits and scored six times in the third, including a two-run single by Matt McCamley and a two-run double by Ryan Watkins.
Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny) doubled in
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) in the fourth, and
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) tripled in a run and scored on an error in the fifth to pull IUP within 6-4. The Bald Eagles tacked on a run in the sixth and held on in the seventh when the Crimson Hawks loaded the bases before
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) grounded out to third.
IUP plays a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday in Greensburg against Seton Hill and returns to PSAC West play Friday with a doubleheader against Gannon in Erie. The Crimson Hawks and Golden Knights then play a twinbill in Indiana the following day.
