IUP dropped both ends of a doubleheader Sunday at Gannon, losing the first game 5-2 before seeing the Golden Knights pull out a 7-6 victory in their last at-bat in the nightcap.
IUP (12-14, 4-4 PSAC West) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener but did not score again against Gannon pitchers Don Marchione and Landon Wahl.
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) led off with a double and
Frank Sirolli (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) singled and stole second.
Vern Powell (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) drove in a run with a ground out, and
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) added an RBI single.
The Golden Knights (8-12, 4-4) struck back with three in the bottom of the first, including a two-run single by Evan Baglieri, and added runs in the second and fifth. The Crimson Hawks only other threat came in the fourth when they loaded the bases with one out before
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) grounded into a double play.
Ben Weimer (New Alexandria/Linsly School) threw four innings in relief of starter
Mitch Perez (Eldersburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph), allowing five hits and one run while striking out three. Marchione gave up four hits in six innings for Gannon, and Wahl worked the seventh for the save, striking out two.
The Golden Knights took the second game when Terry Carson drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the seventh off
Stephen Cooke (Severn, MD/Archbishop Curley). IUP had two chances to break a 6-6 tie but left runners on second and third in the sixth and the bases loaded in the seventh.
IUP again struck early, taking a 4-0 lead in the first. Zinsmeister doubled and scored on a single by
Vern Powell (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca),
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) had a two-run double and
Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny) also knocked in a run with a two-base hit.
Mike Tomko drove in two runs to pull Gannon within 4-2 in the bottom of the first, and the Crimson Hawks got one back in the second on a double by
Cory Sawka (Uniontown/Uniontown) and two ground outs.
The Golden Knights pulled within 5-4 in the second and tied it in the fourth on a solo homer by Eric Bradley. After Kyle Harpster singled, Cooke relieved
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing, Pa./Council Rock North) and hit two batters before allowing the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice grounder by Jordan Bergado.
IUP tied it in the fifth when Powell walked, moved to second on a sacrifice, third on a single by
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) and scored on a ground out by Songer.
Cooke took the loss despite allowing only two hits and the one run in 3 1-3 innings. He walked one and struck out two.
The Crimson Hawks play a crossover doubleheader next weekend, traveling to Bloomsburg Friday before hosting the Huskies the following day. Both twinbills begin at 1 p.m.
