Mercyhurst pitching held the IUP bats in check in both games, and the Lakers swept a PSAC West doubleheader from the Crimson Hawks by scores of 10-2 and 5-2 Saturday in Erie.
IUP had only nine hits in the doubleheader in dropping to 12-18 overall and 4-6 in the PSAC West. The division-leading Lakers improved to 21-7 and 7-4.
Mercyhurst exploded for 10 runs on six hits and a critical IUP error in the second inning of the first game. The Lakers had four extra base hits in the inning, including a two-run triple by Kevin McCall and three straight doubles that capped the uprising.
The Crimson Hawks scored both of their runs in the fifth when
Frank Sirolli (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) walked,
Vern Powell (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) doubled and
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) grounded a two-run single up the middle.
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) had two of IUP's five hits.
Eric Aschley allowed three hits and struck out four in five scoreless innings for the Lakers.
Ben Weimer (New Alexandria/Linsly School) took the loss.
IUP took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap on a
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) groundout, but Mercyhurst came right back with two in its half of the inning on RBI hits by McCall and Bill Gerstenslager.
The teams traded runs in the third, with the Crimson Hawks tying it on a grounder by Sirolli. The Lakers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when a Craig Denman single knocked in a pair.
Jake Shaffer had two of IUP's four hits while
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) scored both runs. Craig Stewart took the loss, allowing six hits and three runs in four innings, and Ben Rawding was the complete game winner for the Lakers, striking out four.
The two teams play another doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. at Owen Dougherty Field.
