IUP Moves to 4-0 with Sunday Win over Seton Hill

Box Score

INDIANA, PA - Scooter Renkin (Midlothian, VA/Blue Ridge) was one of four Crimson Hawks in double-figures with 13 points as 19th-ranked IUP defeated Seton Hill 63-55 on Sunday night in the second day of the IRMC Classic at the Kovalchick Complex.

The Crimson Hawks owned the boards 41-26, grabbing 13 on the offensive end and forced Seton Hill to shoot just 37 percent from the floor.

It was the Griffins who took an early 5-2 lead with the help of a three-pointer by Oliver McGlade before IUP answered with three straight layups by Josh Wiegand (Whiteford, MD/John Carroll) to go on top 8-5 less than five minutes into the game.

After a 3:07 stretch without any scoring, both teams would take turns with the lead, with the Crimson Hawks going on top by four at 20-16 after another lay in by Wiegand. The Griffins tied it up two possessions later, but Renkin's second three of the half gave IUP the lead 23-20, one it would not relinquish before the break. Wiegand scored four more points while Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) and Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) added free throws as the Crimson Hawks took a 30-27 lead into the half.

Souberbielle, Renkin and Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) kept IUP ahead by four early in the second half before a triple by Souberbielle gave the Crimson Hawks a 41-34 lead at the 14:40 mark.

Seton Hill then scored the next six points to cut its deficit to two, later tying the game at 46-46 with 9:18 left.

Both teams battled with the lead before a layup and three-pointer by Renkin put IUP on top 53-48 less than four minutes later. After trading a pair of free throws and buckets, the Griffins again cut it to two at 57-55 on a three by David Windsor.

Keita would widen the gap by himself with back-to-back three-pointers, giving IUP the eight point lead it would eventually win by.

Over the final 47 seconds the Griffins would not be able to find the bottom of the net, missing a pair of free throws, a jumper and a three-pointer.

In addition to Renkin's 13, Souberbielle and Wiegand each scored 12 while Chance chipped in 10 points. Souberbielle grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists in 33 minutes. Wiegand had five rebounds, including four on the offensive end, and Keita eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

IUP knocked down 7-of-12 three-point attempts, with Renkin hitting 3-of-4 and Keita nailing both of his.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action next weekend with PSAC crossover action, traveling to Cheyney on Saturday before playing at West Chester on Sunday.
