A Pair of Records Fall on the Opening Night of the PSAC Swimming Championships

MECHANICSBURG, PA - Two records fell while Brandon Hopkins (Marion, VA/Marion) and Christina Janosky (Dover, Pa. /Dover ) were the top individual point scorers for the IUP men's and women's swimming teams on Thursday night as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships got underway at Cumberland Valley High School.

Hopkins time of 9:39.10 in the 1000 free broke the school record by more than five seconds, bettering his previous season best by more than 21 seconds to finish in fourth place, earning IUP 15 points. In addition, Hopkins finish was also an NCAA "B" cut time. 

Also swimming in the 1000 free, David Donovan (Edinboro/General McLane) posted his own NCAA "B" cut time of 9:48.14 to finish in sixth place overall while Matt Nakagama (Columbia, MD/Atholton) came in 13th place with a time of 10:07.46. 

Janosky earned her own NCAA "B" cut time on the women's side, finishing in 11th place with a time of 10:35.28, earning six points for the Crimson Hawks. Her time was 17 seconds better than her previous season best.

Ally Long (Frederick, MD/Frederick) also scored for IUP, finishing with an NCAA "B" cut time of 10:38.32 while Chanele Molano (Centreville, VA/Westfield) (10:44.77), Gabby Guttman (Allentown/Salisbury) (10:52.59), and Dana Steinert (Kent, Ohio/Kent Theodore Roosevelt) (10:57.00).

The women's 200 medley relay team of Emily Shumaker (Carlisle/Big Spring), Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West), Kala Misavage (Danville/Danville) and Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) had the other record setting performance of the night with a time of 1:46.94, breaking the previous mark .65 seconds. The NCAA "B" cut time was good enough for a sixth place finish, earning 26 points.

The men's 200 medley relay team did not earn any points as they were disqualified for an early take-off.

At the end of day one, the women are in fourth place overall with 35 points while the men are in seventh with 32 points. West Chester leads both sides with 121 and 85 points, respectively.
