Softball Splits Pair of Games on Saturday

Marissa Leslie had an excellent game two as the Crimson Hawks notched win number one of 2012
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, FL – Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) allowed just six hits in 5.2 innings en route to her first collegiate win as the 10th-ranked IUP softball team split a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday. The Crimson Hawks could only muster two hits in a 5-0 loss to Concordia-St. Paul in game one, but bounced back with an impressive 3-2 win over Lees McRae in game two.

IUP had a scoring chance early in game one when Megan McCormick (Evans City/Seneca Valley) smacked a double to get into scoring  position, but the Crimson Hawks were unable to break through. A second chance would come later in the game when Monica Iachini (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) would single. Iachini swiped second to get into scoring position, but was left stranded there.

Concordia-St. Paul got on the scoreboard when Cassie Bertlesen drove in two runs on a single and Brynn Larsen had an RBI triple. Larsen would score on the next at-bat when Erin Tjornhom brought her home with a squeeze bunt. Kelly King (Nazareth/Bethlehem Catholic) allowed five runs in the loss, but just two were earned.

Game two saw excellent pitching from both teams, but a big second inning for the Crimson Hawks proved to be the difference as IUP notched win number one on the year. The Crimson Hawks plated their first run when Iachini reached on a fielder's choice and a run came across on an error by the Lees McRae second baseman.

IUP would add two more runs in the inning when Marissa Leslie (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel), McCormick and Stef Poates (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) were all walked in order to force in the runs.

The Crimson Hawks found themselves in a jam late in the game when Lees McRae put two runners on with two outs, but King was called from the bullpen and came in to record the game's final out and earn the save.

Leslie reached on all four plate appearances in game two, going 2-for-2 with two singles and a pair of walks. Poates and McCormick both added RBI for IUP.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action tomorrow morning when they face Adelphi at 9:30 a.m. and Caldwell at 1:00 p.m.
