YOUNG HARRIS, GA – The Crimson Hawks split their Saturday games on the opening day of their spring break trip, defeating Waldorf 11-1 before a 21-18 extra inning loss to Young Harris.
The Crimson Hawks did nearly all of their damage in the first inning of opening win, getting a 1-2-3 top half from starter
Matt Szukics (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) before putting up eight runs in the bottom of the frame to take early control.
Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny) broke the scoreless tie with a grand slam, scoring
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn),
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) and
Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca).
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) and
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) followed with back-to-back singles before a David McNeil foul out put runners on the corners with just one down.
Tice stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position, before
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys)'s RBI groundout scored Lupia for the fifth run of the inning. IUP capitalized on a mistake by Waldorf as
Cory Sawka (Uniontown/Uniontown) reached first after a passed ball on a strikeout, putting two runners on as Zinsmeister came up again and belted a three-run homer to right center to wrap up the Crimson Hawks scoring.
Szukics would pitch scoreless innings in the second, third and fourth while the Crimson Hawks would put another run on the board in the bottom half of that inning when a walk by
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) brought home his brother Mike.
Waldorf picked up its lone run in the fifth, loading the bases before scoring on wild pitch. Szukics pitched out of the threat, leaving two runners one without any major damage.
The Crimson Hawks picked up two more runs in the seventh, with Songer scoring on a sacrifice fly out from Tice and Quiggle bringing home
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) on a double to the gap in left center.
Szukics went five innings to pick up his first win of the year, allowing just four hits, walking two and striking out one. Seven different Crimson Hawks contributed to their nine hits while Quiggle, Songer and Zinsmeister accounted for nine of the team's 11 RBI.
The scoring came early and often in game two against Young Harris, as IUP had a 13-6 lead after just three innings.
The Crimson Hawks scored eight runs in the opening inning, including RBI doubles by Songer,
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) and
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk). Zinsmeister also hit his second three-run homer of the day in helping IUP to its scoring barrage.
After a four-run bottom half by Young Harris, IUP added four more in the second on just two hits, capitalizing on a pair of wild pitches and an error.
IUP scored one run in each of the fourth and sixth innings while Young Harris added a pair in the sixth as the Crimson Hawks still held a 15-8 lead through six.
Young Harris had its big inning in the eighth, scoring seven runs, cutting the IUP lead to 17-16 heading into the seventh.
Young Harris added one in the ninth before each team scored one in the 10th with the team's still tied at 18-18. Young Harris then got a three-run homer in the bottom half of the 11th to finish the marathon game with a 21-18 win.
The Crimson Hawks collected 18 hits, with four coming from Beatty and three each coming from Foster, Songer and Sawka. Beatty had four RBI while Zinsmeister knocked in three.
The Crimson Hawks (4-5-1) are back in action tomorrow with another pair of games against Young Harris and Waldorf.
