YOUNG HARRIS, GA - The IUP baseball team had its second straight split of the weekend, defeating Waldorf before losing to Young Harris on Sunday afternoon. The Crimson Hawks held off a late threat by Waldorf for an 8-7 win early in the day before succombing to Young Harris 19-6 later in the afternoon.
After giving up a run in the second inning of the day's first game, IUP struck back with three in the third, starting with back-to-back singles by
Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain) and
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) to put two runners on with one out. A walk put
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) on first, loading the bases before a wild pitch brought DeLuca home for IUP's first run. The Crimson Hawks would get another run on a balk and their third on an infield single by
Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny) as Zinsmeister and Lupia crossed the plate in the inning.
Another run by Waldorf in the fourth gave them a 5-3 lead as the Crimson Hawks went three innings scoreless innings.
IUP then took it's lead in the seventh on an RBI single by
Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca), scoring
Cory Sawka (Uniontown/Uniontown) and
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys), two of the Crimson Hawks three runs in the inning. They'd extend their lead to 8-5 in the eighth when Quiggle smashed a homerun to right, bringing
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) and
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk) across the plate.
Waldorf would threaten, scoring once in the bottom half of the inning to make it 8-6 before putting two on with one out in the bottom of the ninth. A wild pitch moved those two runners into scoring position before a walk loaded the bases, still with just one down. A ground out scored one run, but the tying and go-ahead runners were now both in scoring position.
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys), who had entered in sixth, then ended that Waldorf threat as he fanned the final batter to secure the win.
Uhl picked up the victory for IUP, striking out five while giving up two runs on three hits in four innings of work.
Greg Stewart (Kittanning/Elderton), the starter on the mound, went the first five innings, striking out six while giving up four earned.
IUP tallied nine hits, as Quiggle finished 3-for-5 with a double, homerun, two RBI and two runs scored.
In game two, Young Harris came out with seven runs in the first along with six more in the third to take a commanding 13-2 lead through three. Quiggle was responsible for the Crimson Hawks two runs, tripling down the right field line, scoring Uhl and
Austin Mock (State College/State College).
Three more in each the fourth and fifth innings for Young Harris put the game out of reach for IUP, as the Crimson Hawks added four more runs, including a two-run homer by Uhl in the sixth.
It was a hit parade again between the two schools, totaling 29 on the day, with 11 coming from IUP. Uhl completed a solid all-around day by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.
IUP (5-6-1) returns to the diamond on Tuesday with a doubleheader in North Carolina against Brevard.
