Softball Downs Adelphi 8-7 in Eight Innings

Box Score KISSIMMEE, FL - Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel)'s eighth-inning single drove in Tara Waldo (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) to seal an 8-7 win for the IUP softball team over Adelphi Monday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games. with the win, The Crimson Hawks to 2-3-1 on the young season.

IUP needed extra frames to come out on top Monday, but finally broke free in the eighth inning when Mauk delivered with the game-winning infield single.

The Crimson Hawks found themselves in a hole early Monday night after Adelphi posted four runs in the first inning, but IUP would punch back in the second when Jen Beaver (Chester Springs/Owen J. Roberts) smacked a double that would plate a pair of runs. Beaver would later score on a Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) RBI ground out.

Adelphi would take back control in the fourth, however, when Janine Leo nailed a two-run homer to give the Panthers a 6-3 lead. Adelphi would add another run later in the inning to take a four-run lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) would pull IUP to within three runs in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot, and after a scoreless inning by Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge), the Crimson Hawks would roar back in the fifth. IUP loaded the bases with no outs looking for a big inning, and after two illegal pitches scored a pair of runs, Megan McCormick (Evans City/Seneca Valley) knocked in Marissa Leslie (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) with a single to tie the game at 7-7.

IUP knocked on the door in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs, but Adelphi managed to work out of the jam and avoid a Crimson Hawks game-winner. That would not the case in the next inning, however.

With Waldo on second and Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) on first after a single, Beaver looked to advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt. The attempt was misplayed by the defense, however, allowing both runners to advance and Beaver to safely load the bases. IUP would not miss its opportunity this inning, as Mauk delivered an infield single to plate Waldo and wrap up an exciting win for the Crimson Hawks.

McCoy earned the win for the Crimson Hawks after hurling four shutout innings in relief to setup the thrilling play for Mauk.

Monday's win came on the heels of IUP's Sunday matchup with Adelphi, which was ruled a tie after the teams were unable to complete the final inning due to rain. The Crimson Hawks held a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning before play was suspended, but still notched the win in exciting fashion Monday.

IUP returns to the diamond on Tuesday when the Crimson Hawks take on Minnesota State-Moorhead and Minnesota-Duluth. First pitch with Moorhead is set for 9:00 a.m., while 11:00 a.m. is the scheduled start time for the game with Minnesota-Duluth.
