Poates Powers Softball to Split on Tuesday

Stef Poates' two RBI led IUP to a win in game one Tuesday
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, FL - Stef Poates (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) had a homer and two RBI in game one to lead the IUP softball team to a 4-1 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead at the Rebel Spring Games in Forida on Tuesday morning.

The Crimson Hawks took on Minnesota-Duluth in the day's second game, but despite an excellent outing in the circle by Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ), IUP was unable to break through on offense, falling by a score of 3-0.

Poates got the scoring going early in game one when she belted a solo home run in the second inning to give the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 advantage. IUP would add another run in the third inning when Megan McCormick (Evans City/Seneca Valley) knocked an RBI single that plated Monica Iachini (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel).

McCormick and Iachini would again be involved in an IUP scoring play in the fifth inning, when both players and Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) all reached on singles to load the bases for Poates. She would deliver once again with a sacrifice fly that scored Prendergast and gave the Crimson Hawks a crucial insurance run. IUP would add another run late on a wild pitch to seal the win.

Kelly King (Nazareth/Bethlehem Catholic) was excellent for the Crimson Hawks, allowing just five hits and striking out five batters in a complete game win.

Game two saw much of the same from the IUP pitching staff, as Campbell allowed just two earned runs on three hits and a walk in six innings of work. Unfortunately for the Crimson Hawks, Minnesota-Duluth pitcher Megan Mullen was equally as impressive in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out 10 in a shutout effort.

Iachini jumped on Mullen off the opening pitch, leading off the game with a single, but IUP would muster little more throughout the rest of the game as Mullen settled in. Marissa Leslie (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) and Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) would add hits for the Crimson Hawks, but they were unable to plate any runs off of Mullen.

With the split, the Crimson Hawks record now stands at 3-4-1 heading into the final day of the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow. IUP faces Lake Erie at 1:00 p.m. before taking on Northwood at 3:00 p.m.
