WASHINGTON, PA -
Stephen Cooke (Severn, MD/Archbishop Curley) struck out eight batters in a complete game win in the opening game of a doubleheader against rival Cal in IUP's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West opener on Saturday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, Pennsylvania. The Crimson Hawks won the opener 8-5 before dropping game two to the Vulcans 7-6.
Cooke went seven innings, striking out eight and giving up eight hits along with four earned runs as he went 2-0 on the year.
The Crimson Hawks collected a run in each of the first two innings, getting an RBI groundout from
Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) in the first and a solo homer by
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) in the second.
The Vulcans (10-9, 1-1) counted with a paif of runs in the third to tie the score at 2-2 before
Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny) crushed a two-run homer down the left field line in the fifth as IUP took a 4-2 lead.
IUP added another run in the sixth, capitalizing on a Vulcans error as Foster grounded out and drove home
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) to go on top 7-2.
Cal then came back in the bottom half, getting four hits, including three RBI singles to pull within 7-5 heading into the final inning.
The Crimson Hawks added an insurance run in the seventh, as
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk) scored on a wild pitch to make it a three-score game.
IUP jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two, with an RBI triple coming from
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) in the third inning. The Vulcans came back with six runs in the third, getting five hits, including an RBI triple to take a 6-3 lead.
The Crimson Hawks tied it up in the fourth as
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) tripled down the left field line to score Songer, Foster and Tice.
After two scorless ininings, the Vulcans took the lead with a run-scoring triple to right center, shutting down IUP in the top of the seventh for the win.
The Crimson Hawks totaled 19 hits on the day, as Uhl went 4-for-8 with a double, homerun and two RBI in the doubleheader.
IUP (8-9-1, 1-1) will host a doubleheader with the Vulcans on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in a contest that's been moved up due to incoming rain.
