Box Score SALEM, VA –
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) tossed six shutout innings and struck out 11 batters while allowing just two hits as the IUP softball team defeated Glenville State by a score of 7-0 at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament Sunday. The Crimson Hawks were powered on the offensive end by
Tara Waldo (Pittsburgh/Baldwin), who went 3-4 with a double, homer and three RBI.
It would not take long for IUP to strike first blood on Sunday, as the Crimson Hawks would post two runs in the top of the first inning.
Stef Poates (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) singled to knock in
Marissa Leslie (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel), and she would later score when Waldo smacked a deep double to right field.
The Crimson Hawks were right back at it in the second when
Jen Beaver (Chester Springs/Owen J. Roberts) doubled to lead off the inning and swiped third base. After a walk to
Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) put runners on the corners, Beaver and Mauk pulled off a double-steal that allowed Beaver to score safely and give the Crimson Hawks a 3-0 lead.
IUP would not be done in the second inning, however, as
Megan McCormick (Evans City/Seneca Valley) added another run with an RBI double to right-center that scored Mauk and extended the IUP lead to four.
After a scoreless fifth, the Crimson Hawks would put together another big scoring inning in the sixth. Leslie led off the inning with a triple and would later score on a passed ball to give IUP a 5-0 lead. After McCormick walked, Waldo stepped in and nailed a two-run homer to cap another high-scoring game for the Crimson Hawks offense.
In addition to Waldo's three hits, McCormick, Beaver and
Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) all notched two hits for the Crimson Hawks.
Kelly King (Nazareth/Bethlehem Catholic) pitched a perfect seventh inning for IUP to preserve the shutout.
The Crimson Hawks wrapped up their spring break trips to Florida and Virginia with a record of 8-6-1. They return home to Indiana this Wednesday for a double-header with Shepherd at Podbielski Field. First pitch in game one is set for 1:30 p.m.
