INDIANA, PA -
John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk)'s sacrifice fly to center drove in the winning run in the eighth inning of game one while
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) got plunked with the bases loaded to bring home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning of game two as IUP swept Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover baseball doubleheader at Dougherty Field on Sunday afternoon.
Beatty's RBI flyout came with one out and the bases loaded, as
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) safely crossed the plate when the throw from the outfield went wide. After a 1-2-3 top of the eighth from reliever
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North),
Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny) led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. With
Greg Stewart (Kittanning/Elderton) pinch running for Songer, Uhl singled up the middle to put a pair of runners on with no outs.
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) then singled through the left side, however Stewart couldn't make it home as he was thrown out from left, but with the throw two runners now stood in scoring position.
Austin Mock (State College/State College) was intentionally walked to give a force out at every base, but Beatty's flyout was deep enough in right center field to bring Uhl home from third, ending the eight inning game.
It was Millersville (22-19) that got on the board first, taking advantage of a wild pitch in the first inning to make it 1-0.
It wouldn't take long for the Crimson Hawks to tie it up, as the second batter in the lineup,
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge), knocked a solo shot over the fence in right center to make it a 1-1 ball game.
The Marauders went back on top by one the very next inning with an RBI single by Evan King, holding on to that 2-1 lead until the fourth inning.
That's when a base hit by Songer was followed by an RBI double to left center by Lupia, tying it back up at 2-2.
Again Millersville broke the tie, this time going ahead by two runs when Ryan Chelser doubled to deep center, bringing a pair of runners home to make it a 4-2 Millersville lead. The Crimson Hawks got one back in the bottom half, putting a pair of runners on when
Cory Sawka (Uniontown/Uniontown) singled up the middle and
Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain) walked. After a pitching change,
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) knocked a single down the left field line, advancing everyone a base to load it for Tice, who reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Sawka from third.
IUP tied it in the sixth, as Beatty got his first big play of the game with a two-out triple to right center, scoring Uhl to make it 4-4 heading into the seventh and eventually into extra innings.
Evan Phillips (Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) started on the mound for IUP and went 6.0 innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out four. Weed picked up the win in relief, striking out a pair in his only inning on the mound.
The Crimson Hawks totaled 11 hits in game one, including three each coming from Uhl and Lupia while Beatty and Tice each drove in a pair of runs.
In game two it was Millersville that held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 10th after an RBI single in the top half. With one down, Lupia singled to center before
Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with one out. Two batters and one out later, Mock drew a walk to load the bases before
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown)'s infield single scored his brother Aaron, tying the game.
With the bases still loaded and with a 1-2 count, Zinsmeister got hit, bringing home pinch runner DeLuca for the game-winning run.
The Crimson Hawks took the first lead in game two, with back-to-back homeruns by Songer and Uhl in the fourth inning gave IUP a 3-0 lead.
Millersville got one back in the fifth on an RBI pinch hit double by Carlos Medina before tying it up in the seventh on another RBI double by Medina. The two teams would garner just one combined hit in extra innings before a double and an RBI single in the top half gave the Marauders a 4-3 lead.
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) entered in the fifth in relief and went the rest of the way for the Crimson Hawks, earning the win after giving up three earned on five hits with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
The Crimson Hawks tallied six hits in game two but also drew 10 walks on the day. Tice went 2-for-4 while Songer collected a pair of RBI.
IUP, now 19-20-1 overall, remain 5-11 in the PSAC West with eight games left to play. The Crimson Hawks will host Pitt-Greensburg in a single non-conference game on Wednesday before a huge series with rival Slippery Rock this weekend.
