INDIANA, PA –
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) had five RBI on the day as the IUP baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe Lock Haven Sunday. The Crimson Hawks rolled to a 6-4 win in game one before holding on for a 4-3 win in game two.
In between games one and two, The Crimson Hawks senior class was honored for their excellent careers at IUP.
Craig Hibell (New Bethlehem/Redbank Valley),
Greg Stewart (Kittanning/Elderton),
Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny) and
Cory Sawka (Uniontown/Uniontown) were part of 96 wins and two trips to the PSAC tournament in their time at IUP.
Hibell started game one for the Crimson Hawks on Sunday and allowed just three earned runs in 3.1 innings of work, however the Bald Eagles would tack on an unearned run in the third inning when Ryan Henrizty scored on an error, but the lead would be shortlived.
The Crimson Hawks would punch back in the bottom of the inning when Lupia smacked a bases-loaded single to centerfield that plated
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) and
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) to give IUP a 2-1 lead after three.
Lock Haven would knot the game at 2-2 in the fourth when Jose Diaz singled home a run, and the Bald Eagles would take the lead just three batters later when Josh Jones drilled a liner up the middle that scored two more runs.
That score would hold until the bottom of the fifth when Tice nailed an RBI double to cut the lead in half, and Lupia would tie it at 4-4 when he scored Tice with a single.
Brother
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) would get into the act for IUP in the sixth inning when he crushed a triple to left center field that scored
Austin Mock (State College/State College), and he would come around to score just a batter later on a Lock Haven wild pitch to give the Crimson Hawks a 6-4 lead.
That lead would be more than enough for relief pitcher
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North), who retired the seventh in order to seal the game one win for IUP. Weed tossed 3.2 scoreless innings for the Crimson Hawks and picked up the win.
The Crimson Hawks would stay hot early in game two when knocked an RBI single to right field field. IUP would add another run when
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) scored to give the Crimson Hawks a 2-0 lead after two innings.
IUP would extend its lead to four in the third inning when Lupia roped a single through the left side that plated Tice and Sawka. The Crimson Hawks looked to coast to an easy win with the four-run lead, but the Bald Eagles would rally in the seventh.
Scott Zuback and Kevin Cressman both had RBI singles to trim the deficit to just two, and Cory Dorman's sacrifice fly just two batters later scored Zuback and pulled Lock Haven to within one. With the tying run in scoring position, IUP closer Mock came in and retired the final batter to salt away the sweep for the Crimson Hawks.
Stewart started the game on the rubber for IUP and threw 3.2 scoreless innings, while
Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) allowed just two earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. DeLuca went 3-for-3 with an RBI in game two, while Lupia was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
With the sweep, the Crimson Hawks finish the season with a record of 25-23-1, 11-13 in the PSAC West.
