Softball Raises $1,500 for Heather's Haven

Crimson Hawks in the Community

INDIANA, PA – On April 13, The IUP softball team earned a much-needed split with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central rival Bloomsburg that would propel the Crimson Hawks to their second consecutive PSAC title. The day meant so much than that, however, as IUP raised $1,500 for the Heather's Haven Organization.

Heather's Haven is a non-profit program that is dedicated to helping children and their families who are battling cancer by providing them with camping experiences, year-round events and activities, and giving them support through support groups and networks, which will allow them to know they are never alone long after their camping experience has ended.

During the doubleheader on April 13, the Crimson Hawks collected donations on behalf of Heather's Haven, and sold commemorative t-shirts and wristbands. In addition, young IUP fans had the chance to runs the bases with players in between games one and two. Heather's Haven President Kim Reifsnyder was also on hand at Podbielski Field to speak to the crowd.

The Crimson Hawks raised a total of $1,500 at the event to help get Heather's Haven off the ground and show their support for everyone fighting cancer. “We were honored to be able to benefit an organization like Heather's Haven” said IUP head coach Bill Graham. “We look forward to continuing our work with them for many years to come”.

The program was created in memory of Heather Miller, an 11-year-old girl who passed away on January 29, 2010 after battling Ewing's Sarcoma. Heather's Haven hopes to provide children and their families battling cancer the ability to create memories and enjoy time away from the day-to-day routine of battling this disease.
