ATHENS, WV – The Crimson Hawks totaled 18 runs in two games on Sunday but the Concord bats were alive as well, as IUP dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Mountain Lions 6-5 and 25-13. Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) had two homeruns on the day while Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) totaled five hits.

Concord 6, IUP 5

The Crimson Hawks were the first to score with RBI singles from Ricky Jones in the second and Tyler Mroz (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) in the third to take a 2-0 lead into the fourth.

That's when Concord would explode for six runs, doing most of the damage off of mistakes by IUP. The Mountain Lions managed just two hits in the inning but the Crimson Hawks had a pair of errors, two wild pitches, walked two, and hit three more Concord batters.

IUP rallied in the sixth as Mroz led off the inning with a solo shot to left center to make the score 6-3. Two outs later Jones singled through the right side to help trigger a pitching change before Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) took advantage by drilling another homerun for the Crimson Hawks, getting them to within one.

The Crimson Hawks tried to continue the comeback in the seventh, starting things with a two-out infield single by Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown). Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) would pinch run for Lupia and advanced to second when Mroz singled through the left side. But the rally ended as a groundball to the left side forced Bigler out at third.

Mroz ended 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI while Zinsmeister finished 2-for-4 with that two-run homer. Austin Mock (State College/State College) started on the mound and gave up two hits and two earned runs in three innings of work. Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North) and Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) entered in relief, giving up no hits and striking out two in three combined innings.

Concord 25, IUP 13 (nine innings)

Concord struck early and often, scoring six runs in the first, three in the third and four in the fourth.

The Crimson Hawks got on the board in the fifth inning as a double down the left field line brought home Zinsmeister and Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain). Zinsmeister smacked his second homerun of the day with a three-run shot in the sixth and IUP got runs from Bigler and John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk) in the seventh.

Other highlights included an RBI double by Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) in the eighth along with a two-run homer in the ninth. Tice also got in the action with a solo shot in the final inning.

Tice had a big offensive output, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI. Foster also had a pair of doubles, a homerun, and three RBI, going 3-for-6.

IUP collected 14 hits from eight different players and scored in each of the last five innings.
