MURFREESBORO, NC – A solo homerun by
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) in ninth inning of the opening game highlighted IUP's doubleheader sweep of Chowan on Friday as the Crimson Hawks won games of 3-2 and 4-3.
The wins improved the Crimson Hawks to 8-4 on the year and are currently riding a four-game winning streak.
Stephen Cooke (Severn, MD/Archbishop Curley) struck out 13 Chowan batters in eight innings in the opening game, picking up the win and moving to 3-1 on the season. He gave up seven hits and walked one, allowing just one earned run.
Uhl's homer led off the ninth for the Crimson Hawks, breaking a 2-2 extra-inning tie.
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) would enter for Cooke in the bottom half to retire the side and pick up the save.
IUP got its first two runs of the game in the second inning as a two-out double down the left field line by
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) brought home
Tyler Mroz (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley). Lupia would then take advantage of a fielding error by the left fielder to come around to score himself, making it 2-0.
Chowan got one back in the fourth on an RBI double to center and tied the score in the fifth with a run-scoring base hit to left. The Hawks then threatened to break the tie in the eighth inning, getting a runner to third with two outs but Cooke mowed down the next batter to get out of the jam.
Cooke struck out two batters in an inning four times in his eight innings, chalking up three strikeouts in the sixth.
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) picked up two of the Crimson Hawks five hits in the game.
The Crimson Hawks got on the board first in the second game, as back-to-back doubles by Zinsmeister and
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge) along with a sacrifice fly from
Austin Mock (State College/State College) gave IUP a 2-0 lead after the first.
They took a 4-0 lead in the fourth as a sacrifice fly by
Jordan DeLuca (Broad Top/Tussey Mountain) was followed by an RBI double from Zinsmeister pushed across two more runs. Chowan got three runs back in the bottom half, putting together four hits including an RBI double and triple to narrow the gap to one.
Chowan threatened in the seventh, putting two on with two outs but Zaorski forced a groundout to end the game.
Kyle Zambanini (Jerome/Conemaugh Twp.) got the start and struck out nine batters in 6.1 innings, picking up the win and improving to 3-0 on the year.
The Crimson Hawks totaled nine hits including three from
Jordan Giannini (Latrobe/Greater Latrobe). Zinsmeister and Tice each added two hits and an RBI.
These two teams will go again tomorrow with another doubleheader. First pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
